La forma de los cotiledones es un carácter importante para identificar la planta recién nacida.
A menudo una misma especie puede presentar cierta variabilidad en sus cotiledones, pero aún así, si estamos intentando identificar una mala hierba, no disponemos de mucha más información, por lo que debemos aprovecharla.
Si la forma no está clara, puede ser interesante utilizar la forma del ápice o de la base del cotiledón, en lugar de la forma global.
